Our player-count dataset turned a month old this week - twenty daily snapshots of every game in the directory since June 28. That's finally enough history to measure the most talked-about shape in Roblox: the update spike. We counted 27 events in the month where a game's count jumped at least 60% snapshot-to-snapshot from a base of two thousand or more players, then traced each one forward.
The headline number: the typical spike gives back half its gain within one to four days. Fisch's enormous mid-July event spike - 74,000 to 317,000 at the July 18 snapshot, the biggest single jump we recorded - was half gone by July 20. Dandy's World more than doubled on July 24 and had surrendered half the bump by the next morning's snapshot. Dress To Impress, Driving Empire, Military Tycoon: two days each. The slowest big spike in the set took four. If you run a game and your update just tripled your count, history's advice is unsentimental: you have roughly a weekend.
The number that actually matters is the floor
Here's the split the half-life number hides, and it's the most useful thing in this dataset so far. Follow the spikes past the decay and the 27 events sort into two families.
The round-trippers. Fisch's 317,000 settled back to the 60-75,000 range - which is where it started. Ten days of snapshots later, the spike might as well not have happened; the event bought a spectacular weekend and left the baseline untouched. Military Tycoon's July spike did the same on a smaller scale.
The stair-climbers. Forsaken spiked from 56,000 to 200,000 - and settled in the 85-95,000 range, roughly 60% above its old life. Dress To Impress jumped from 80,000 to 184,000 in early July and still holds 115-125,000 three weeks later. Greenville's July 25 quadrupling is young, but so far it's holding well above its old floor. Same spike shape, completely different outcome: these updates didn't rent players, they recruited some.
So the honest way to read any update: ignore the peak, wait a week, and compare the new floor to the old one. The peak measures marketing; the floor measures the update. A game that spikes to triple and round-trips gained a headline. A game that spikes to triple and keeps a third gained a future.
The cautionary long arc
Anime Vanguards remains the dataset's best cautionary tale, and the month added a chapter. It entered our records at 57,000, bounced with each patch (back to 45,000 on July 13), and ground down to 7,000 by July 26 - a 88% slide in a month, in steps, each bounce smaller than the last. Then our July 28 snapshot caught it at 25,000: another update, another bounce. That's not a dying game; that's a game living entirely on the update cycle, with a floor that drops between injections. When someone shows you a single day's count as proof a game is dead or back, this series is the reason to ask for the whole line.
The honest fine print
Four caveats, at the usual volume. Our snapshots are once daily at varying hours, so "half-life in days" has a resolution of about a day and inherits some hour-of-day noise. Two long gaps in the record (July 1-5 and July 13-18) mean some "spikes" observed across a gap actually peaked somewhere inside it - Fisch's true peak was likely higher than the 317,000 we caught. A handful of obviously broken API readings - single-digit player counts sandwiched between 50,000-player days - were excluded as glitches rather than reported as collapses; a tracker that believed every row would have declared Anime Vanguards dead twice on days it demonstrably wasn't. And 27 events in one summer month is a start, not a law - the constants here will sharpen as the dataset ages.
What holds already: spikes are brief, floors are the truth, and the trending page resets every day precisely because yesterday's spike is the least reliable fact in Roblox. We'll re-run this when the moat has a season's worth of history instead of a month's - by then the half-life estimate gets error bars, and the stair-climber list gets long enough to ask the better question: what do the updates that keep players have in common?
